The traditional surgical management of treating veins was vein stripping .This is an a operation that requires hosiptal admisison and a general anaesthetic. An incision is made in the groin and at the knee and the long vein stripped out with resultant wounds. Recovery is more prolonged than current management.
Endovenous techniqes have taken over surgery as the gold standard.
Vein stripping is mostly outdated and hardly ever perfomed anymore - only in very select cases.
